Resident Professor

Dale is St Augustine Sailing’s resident “Professor”, offering friendly and informal learning experiences on the water. Whether it is local wildlife, or the physics of sailing, “Dr Dale” is a wealth of fun facts.

Dale earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology at San Jose State University (SJSU) in California, a Master’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Physiology at SJSU while a NASA graduate fellow, and earned his Doctoral degree in Physiology from the University of California.  After graduate school, Dale was an National Institutes of Health Post-Doctoral Scholar at Stanford University and was subsequently recruited to join the Stanford University Medical School Faculty as Associate Professor.  Internationally recognized for his research in the areas of Biological Rhythms, Sleep Physiology, and Translational Science, Dale channeled his scientific knowledge into entrepreneurship, founding two biotech companies (Hypnion, Inc. and Alairion, Inc.) and served as a research executive, earning the prestigious appointment as Distinguished Research Fellow at Eli Lilly and Company.  He later served as Sr. Vice President of Discovery Research at Neumora Therapeutics before retiring to a life of sailing and Sail Science adventures in 2023.

Dale learned to sail on the San Francisco Bay when he was 20 years old and continued his sailing education with St Augustine Sailing utilizing American Sailing Association curriculum through Advanced Coastal Cruising and Seamanship certification. He owns the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 (35 feet) sailing vessel “A La Mer” that is part of the St Augustine Sailing fleet and has experience sailing throughout the Florida east coast and Intercoastal Waterways.
